French Open: World No.17 Francesca Schiavone clinches title

ECSTATIC Francesca Schiavone revealed she took an on-court call from Italy's President after becoming her nation's first-ever female Grand Slam champion.

A stunned Schiavone was handed a mobile phone seconds after seeing off Australian star Samantha Stosur in a thrilling French Open final.

And on the other end was Italian head of state Giorgio Napolitano who wanted to be the first to congratulate the 29-year-old. S

Asked what he had said Schiavone revealed: "Congratulations. Enjoy this moment. It is an honour for Italy."

The world No.17 certainly did her country proud - not just with her result but the manner of her display.

Schiavone went into the match as the underdog.

But she played like a champion to win one of the best women's finals of recent times 6-4 7-6(2). As she had done in previous rounds Schiavone celebrated the moment of triumph by kissing the clay, though this time after falling on to her back in jubilation.

Despite this being her 39th attempt to win a Grand Slam Schiavone insisted she never gave up hope of realising her dream.

She said: "I always dreamed and I always believed in myself, not about winning trophies but just about myself."

Her triumph was not just down to the quality of her play but also her tactics as she nullified the potentially devastating effects of Stosur's serve and forehand.

Schiavone, who now moves up to No.6 in the world, said: "Going to the net was my tactic and to press her on the backhand.

"My goal was to do that and to be aggressive."

Stosur was the first Australian female Major finalist for 30 years and had won the last four of her five clashes with Schiavone.

The 26-year-old was also the hot favourite with the bookies after toppling Justine Henin, Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic on her way to the final.

But the seventh seed had no answer to her opponent's scintillating display.

She said: "I don't think I played that bad.

She just had her day. She went for it and everything came off. It takes guts to do that and she did it.

French Open: Rafael Nadal says Robin Soderling has weather on his side

RAFAEL NADAL reckons Robin Soderling will have the weather on his side when they battle it out for the French Open title at Roland Garros.

Soderling is the only man ever to have beaten Nadal on the Parisian clay and the Spaniard, who is going for his fifth French title, says the weather could be a major boost for the Swede today.

Thunder storms are forecast and when Nadal, right, was quizzed on what type of weather he would prefer, he replied: "Always sun. First thing, because sun is energy.

"Second, because everything is nicer with the sun and third point, because with the sun, my ball is getting more topspin than with rain."

Soderling, who dumped Roger Federer out in a wet and windy quarter final before dispatching Tomas Berdych in a five-set semi, said: "Of course it's tougher when it's warmer, especially physically. I do well in any conditions but against Tomas it was tough."

When asked if similar wet and windy conditions could play into the Swede's hands Nadal said: "Well you can ask Roger about that.

"When the court is humid and wet the ball doesn't bounce as high. It's much heavier so it's more difficult.

"But we're talking about a final here at Roland Garros. I'm not going to start wondering what's the weather going to be like? "Whether it's a sunny day or a rainy day I will play my best tennis."

Nadal will depose Federer as the world No.1 if he defeats Soderling and the 24-year-old Mallorcan has vowed to make that happen no matter what.

Trong set đầu tiên, tay vợt người Ý chỉ giành đúng một break để dẫn 5-4, nhưng chừng đó đã là quá đủ. Còn ở set thứ hai, dù đã bị dẫn 4-1, song Schiavone vẫn kiên trì bám đuổi và buộc đối phương phải thi đấu tie-break. Por segunda vez en su carrera, Rafael Nadal disputará una final de Grand Slam contra un rival distinto de Roger Federer. No lo dice, pero a su nuevo oponente le tiene muchas más ganas que al suizo. “No creo en las revanchas”, reitera Nadal, pero hay una mancha que limpiar tras la derrota del año pasado en los octavos de final, la única hasta hoy en Roland Garros. “Prefería jugar la final contra Berdych porque le he ganado las últimas seis veces”, declara, pero sabe que el duelo carecería de morbo, más ahora que la relación entre ambos se ha normalizado tras el roce ocurrido hace cuatro años en Madrid.

Tampoco busca más problemas con Soderling. “Mi relación con él es normal. Hubo un poco más de tensión de lo habitual en el partido de Wimbledon en 2007, pero después no he tenido ningún problema con él”, explica. “Creo que su carácter ha mejorado. Y lo digo de una manera positiva. Antes era más tímido. Ahora saluda más a la gente”.

“Su juego es diferente, especial, por ese servicio y ese golpeo tan plano… Impresiona”, añade el balear, en busca del séptimo Grand Slam de su carrera con 24 años recién cumplidos. Sólo Borg alcanzó esa cifra con mayor precocidad. “Pero saldré a la pista pensando en Roland Garros, no en Robin Soderling”.

En esta ocasión no habrá dudas. Castigado en sus rodillas en la cita 2009, Nadal llega en perfecto estado físico en esta ocasión. “El año pasado, cuando llegó alguien que me forzó al límite, no estaba preparado para ganar”, admite.

La previsión meteorológica anuncia lluvia para el domingo. “Yo prefiero el sol siempre, primero porque el sol es energía”, comenta el número dos del mundo. “Con el sol, además, mi bola tiene mayor efecto que cuando llueve”. A Soderling, como ha demostrado en este torneo, le van mejor las condiciones lentas. “Que se lo digan a Federer”, recuerda Nadal. ¿La receta entonces para ganarle? "El saque será vital porque él no me concederá muchas opciones de ‘break’. Tendré que jugar largo, alto y a los lados para desplazarle de su posición. La teoría siempre es fácil”.
